All about your weekend retreat

Your course

Drawing inspiration from ideas surrounding the landscape (gardens, plants) or abstract interpretations (Sonia Delaunay’s Orphism art, Cubism) using found materials as a resource, you will explore direct approaches for creating colour and movement in cloth.

A whole range of techniques will be covered such as transfer printing with plants and stencils, simple resists methods, stitch and layering. By exchanging ideas and collaborating with others on the course, you will develop your own creation in terms of new surfaces from found materials for textile mixed media work and stitch.

You will explore variations of straight stitch, hand and machine work to add a diverse range of textures, layers and structure to the work as you progress in the development of your own figurative or abstract projects, always mentored by Cas, a highly experienced artist and tutor.

Your tutor

From a BA Honours degree in Fine Art, Cas has spent a lifetime expanding her knowledge and refining her work in art and textiles. She has been a tutor in adult education for over 20 years, is a practising community artist and has a particular interest in recycling and reusing items to create beautiful pieces of artwork. Cas was guest artist in 2012 at the Knitting and Stitching Show and at the European Patchwork Meeting in 2014. She exhibited with Art Textiles: Made in Britain at the Festival of Quilts 2014 and her latest book, Stitch Stories, published in 2015, includes fabulous contributors and images. She is also a member of the exhibiting group Art Textiles Made in Britain.

I really enjoyed the course and you did and excellent job organising it. The highlight was falling in love with sewing again, after a five year gap. Thank you!

I have attended two courses in the last six months. Excellent tutors and excellent venues.  I’ve learnt so many new quilting techniques.  Can’t wait until the next one.

Yvonne Gill

Just home from an amazing residential course with the talented Cas Holmes. Everything was so easy, from booking, the meet and greet, information packs and support whilst away. The hotel was perfect and Liza Jones did a brilliant job keeping everything running smoothly. I am already researching my next course.
