Course Content

Here is an experimental weekend workshop where you can try your hand at a wide range of techniques, exploring your own preferences as you choose from a menu of (1) art quilts, (2) image transfer (3) embellishers or (4) free machine embroidery.

(1) ART QUILTS – Annette will show you how easy it is to develop your own designs or themes, along with quick techniques to make your individual art quilt using machined crazy patchwork, foundation piecing, appliqué and free cutting piecing, as well as image transfer. You may have landscape pictures or photos that you would like to use for inspiration, or you can work with examples that Annette will bring. Annette will then show you how easy it is to do abstraction – making a picture into an abstract image and then using it in quilt design. (2 day workshop)

(2) IMAGE TRANSFER – Discover the technique Annette uses for transferring images to fabric. You will also learn other ideas for adding paint, colour and embellishments by using Fuse FX, paper, foils, and much more. (1 day workshop)

(3) EMBELLISHERS – Do you have an embellisher that is still in its box? Here is your chance to learn how to use it to make beautiful landscape or flower pictures, with sheer fabrics, wools and felts. Make a truly unique piece of textile art. (1 day workshop)

(4) FREE MACHINE EMBROIDERY – Whether you are new to free machine embroidery or experienced in this technique, Annette will show you how to stitch small pictures which can be framed for presents or gifts, using just straight stitch and zigzag stitch, plus a little hand stitching. (1 day workshop).

Once you have seen the variety of examples Annette will bring, you can choose whether to focus on developing your own art quilt techniques, embellishing, or to expand your machine embroidery skills. Whichever you choose, the results will look stunning when framed.

Annette is an award winning textile artist and art quilter, who also teaches City and Guilds courses to Diploma level. She is a qualified teacher [Cert Ed] and a Tutor on the prestigious Quilt Judging course run by the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles of which she is an ex-President. Of her own work she says “I enjoy the process of making. Leave me in a studio with paint, soldering iron, and a heat gun and I am happy. If my work wins awards, or is selected for juried shows, then that is a bonus.” She currently uses her own photographs in her work, together with mixed media.
