All about your weekend retreat

Your course

Here is your opportunity in a couple of days to add to your skills as you create embellished pictorial pieces of patchwork where shapes are key. Working with 12-18 inch squares, you will discover how to use quilting techniques to emphasise representation and depth.

Over the weekend you will work with two designs – a landscape and a pictorial appliqué piece. Your tutor, Greta Fitchett, will demonstrate in easy to follow stages how to sew these manageable patterns by machine to produce very different effects. Worksheets with full instructions, templates and patterns will be provided.

Be inspired by the English countryside as you work on a small quilt of patchwork fields, with bonded appliqué trees. In this pieced landscape your linear quilting will play an important role, introducing scale as you sculpt the outlines of your pattern.

For the pictorial appliqué, the coastline along with fishing boats are the design sources. Here just a few shapes are used to create the graphic image, quilting is minimal, and yet by using machine stitching and bonded appliqué, your finished piece will be an example of truly creative textile art. And you will take home a couple of pieces that can be further developed as you expand your skills.

Your tutor
